The Swedish and Norwegian string quartet Opus13 has won first prize at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition 2025. Founded in 1983, the competition is held every three years and is considered one of the top competitions for young string quartets. In addition to the first prize, Opus13 also collected five special prizes.
Founded in 2014, the Opus13 string quartet includes Norwegian violinists Sonoko Miriam Welde and Edvard Erdal, Swedish violist Albin Uusijärvi and Swedish cellist Daniel Thorell. The quartet is known for its diverse repertoire and commitment to both classical and contemporary repertoire.
Opus13 is making its first visit to the Korsholm Music Festival this year, and the quartet will perform in several concerts during the festival week, including at Stundars and Replot Church. Opus13 will also have its own concert at Vaasa Baptist Church on Monday 28 July, featuring Vladimir Agopov's String Quartet No. 1 and Franz Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, “Death and the Maiden”.
